The 2023 District 58 Reading Games a huge success!

On February 25, 2023, a free reading competition called The Reading Games took place at O'Neill Middle School. This event was specifically for students in grades 3-8 from District 58 and was both fun and educational. The goal of the Reading Games is to promote reading, introduce children to diverse genres, series, authors, and subjects, and encourage teamwork and accountability. All of this occurs as teams of 5–8 kids led by a parent or other volunteer community member prepare for a fun competitive day of book trivia! The PTA and District 58 Foundation provided a fantastic opportunity for hundreds of students in both morning and afternoon sessions. The students worked hard in their studies and enjoyed some wonderful books in preparation for the competition. A huge shout out to the committee and volunteers who made Reading Games a success!

2023 Harlem Wizards Basketball Event Recap

On Sunday, January 15, 2023 the stands of Downers Grove South High School overflowed with die-hard basketball fans eager to witness the beloved Harlem Wizards! Nearly two thousand spectators were present to witness the professional basketball players compete against District 58's home team, nicknamed the "Grovetrotters", which was comprised of teachers, principals and representatives from many elementary schools.

The Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58 hosted an exciting fundraiser game, using the proceeds to support the important work of District 58 programming and events. As the Wizards played throughout the night, they thrilled fans with their awe-inspiring basketball performances. Whenever the Wizards reached their end of the court, they wowed everyone with their amazing passing and gave our Grovetrotters a chance to show off their defense.

At Halftime, young fans flooded the court, waiting in long lines for their favorite Wizard to sign a water bottle, poster or basketball. Kids spent the entire break meeting their favorite players and even shooting a few hoops on the court!

According to Event Chair and Foundation Board Officer, Mia Churma, "The proceeds from the Harlem Wizards game will finance and support initiatives like District 58 Teachers Grants, Reading Games, Distinguished Service Awards and Select 58 awards for 8th grade students at O'Neill Middle School & Herrick Middle School in the spring."
